Texas Bishop David Paul Moten filed this action against Def Jam Records and Kanye West for their sampling of Moten’s sermon in West’s song “Come to Life.” “Come to Life” expresses West’s emotional fallout from his divorce from Kim Kardashian, and his gratitude to God for seeing him through. Moten’s sermon punctuates these declarations, proclaiming “And I thank God for saving me.” This case echoes the claims made in Greene v. West, when West sampled a young girl’s prayer in his 2016 song “UltraBeam.”
Moten filed a Voluntary Motion to Dismiss within three weeks of filing the complaint, suggesting that the case settled outside of Court.
